Ukrainian Easter eggs, known as pysanky, are intricately decorated eggs that hold deep cultural significance and are created using a traditional wax-resist method.
What are Pysanky?
Pysanky are traditional Ukrainian Easter eggs decorated using a wax-resist method, also known as the batik method. This involves applying melted wax to the eggshell in intricate designs before dipping the egg in various colored dyes. Once the final dye layer is applied, the wax is melted off, revealing the vibrant patterns underneath. The term "pysanka" comes from the Ukrainian verb "pysaty," which means "to write," reflecting the careful craftsmanship involved in creating these eggs.
